Bugs You Don't Know You're Eating

I'm a big proponent of protein. Eggs for breakfast, grilled chicken for lunch, lightly seared filet of salmon for dinner—I can't get enough. But even I have a limit, and that limit generally begins about the time I see exoskeletons, tentacles, pinchers, or stingers sticking out of my food.

I realize that in some parts of the world, bugs are considered a reliable source of protein. But the people who eat those bugs do so willingly. It's a normal part of their diet. Here in the United States, we're pretty squeamish about chomping into insects or stabbing our forks into larvae. And that's why it might come as a shock to discover that, because of the FDA's lax food-safety regulations, your food might very well be crawling with creepy, slimy, buzzing things of all sorts. In fact, it's been estimated that the average person unintentionally eats a pound of insects every year. And I'm not talking about gummy worms here. I'm talking about real live (or formerly live) bugs.

Treatment of Gum Disease Benefits Diabetics

Since oral health is directly linked to diabetes, it's important to maintain healthy gums and dental care if you are diabetic. Diabetes can initiate the development of gum (periodontal) disease, putting one at risk for further complications and causing an influx in health care costs if left untreated.

There are two types of diabetes along with gestational diabetes, which is developed during pregnancy when blood sugar levels become too high.

Type 1 diabetes is when the body destroys the production of insulin, while type 2 diabetes produces insulin that is then produced in insufficient quantity, or is not used in a correct fashion by the body.

Diabetes occurs when the body cannot regulate blood sugar levels. While type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, type 2 diabetes can.

Since blood sugar levels are unstable for a diabetic, dental problems such as gum disease, split between two stages — mild gum (gingivitis) disease, and severe gum (periodontal) disease — can occur.

Diabetes thickens blood vessels after impairing white blood cells, causing the flow of nutrients and waste to slow to and from body tissues, including the mouth. Since periodontal disease is a bacterial infection, and the diabetic's ability to fight infections is greatly reduced, gum disease causes severe complications when left untreated.

A recent three-year study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia involved diabetes patients who were then placed in either a control group (no treatment) or were randomly selected to receive periodontal therapy.

Receiving treatment within the first year for periodontal disease, and undergoing maintenance for the next two years, those who underwent periodontal therapy were hospitalized less than those who were in the control group with no treatment. The total cost for medical care, hospital admission and doctor visits per patient was an average of more than $1,800 less than the control group, with the treatment group constituting for 33 percent less admissions to the hospital than those diabetics that received no treatment for gum disease.

Diabetics suffering from periodontitis are more likely to suffer from complications of poor glycemic (sugar) control than those who have good oral health maintenance. Without glycemic control, the risk for heart attack or stroke, which are linked to diabetes, increases.

When the bacteria caused by periodontal disease in the mouth enters the circulatory system, the body is burdened by an increased inflammatory response in diabetics. This added stress on key organs working to fight the infection, and chronic inflammation can also cause those who are seemingly healthy to develop diabetes.

Not only does a diabetic's health benefit from healthy gums and teeth, avoiding complications that diabetics are prone to such as heart attack or stroke can keep one's health insurance lower after treatment for periodontal disease.

The key to an advantageous and brighter life as a diabetic starts with a healthier smile.

Tick Season Starting Early This Year | I Love To Share

SUNDAY, April 22 (HealthDay News) -- Tick season has started earlier than normal due to the mild winter, which means hikers, gardeners and others who love the outdoors should take precautions to prevent becoming a meal for ticks, an expert says.

People also should keep alert for symptoms of tick-borne diseases.

In Minnesota, patients already are testing positive for tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and babesiosis -- a month or two earlier than normal for the state, said Dr. Bobbi Pritt, a microbiologist and director of the Clinical Parasitology and Virology Laboratories at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Lyme disease and anaplasmosis both are caused by bacteria carried by ticks, while babesiosis is a parasite that infects red blood cells.

But there are a number of things people can do to protect themselves from ticks.

"The first thing is just tick avoidance -- staying out of areas where ticks are going to be present: tall grasses, shrubs, leaf litter," Pritt said in a Mayo Clinic news release.

"Also use insect repellant, such as DEET," Pritt added. "You can also buy clothing that has been impregnated with pyrethroids, which is another type of insect repellant, and there are certain types of insect repellants for pets."

Some other tips:

Keep grass short in yards and don't go into overgrown areas.
Wear long clothing to prevent ticks from accessing your skin.
After spending time outdoors, thoroughly check yourself, your children and your pets for ticks.
Stay on trails when you hike. If you leave the path, wear long pants tucked into your socks.
If you find ticks, remove them immediately. Pinch the tick near its mouth and pull it out slowly in a continuous motion. Don't twist the tick because doing so may leave mouth parts embedded in the skin.

Fever, headache and muscle pain can be signs of a tick-borne illness. A hallmark of Lyme disease is a bull's-eye-patterned rash. Even if you do not recall getting a tick bite but have been working outdoors or visited other tick habitats and develop such symptoms, make sure to mention this to your doctor, Pritt said.

The Worst Habits for Your Heart: Being Glued to the Tube

Spending too much time parked in front of the TV can actually be fatal, according to a 2011 study published in Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The researchers found that people who devoted four or more hours a day to screen-based entertainment—mainly watching the tube--had double the risk of a major cardiac event resulting in hospitalization, death or both, compared to those who watched spent less than two hours daily to these activities.

Another compelling reason to limit TV time: Those who spent the most time on leisure-time screen-based entertainment had a 48 percent higher risk of dying prematurely, even if they also exercised. Recent research also shows that too much sitting can be just as bad for your heart as smoking.

Type One Diabetes During Pregnancy | I Love To Share

Controlling blood glucose (BG) during pregnancy is crucial for both mother and baby. In my opinion, this is easier said than done.

I have used the expression “it takes a village” numerous times when referring to my experience.

As a T1D (Type 1 diabetic) I knew to plan ahead. My A1Cs were in good shape. I had already started prenatal vitamins and folic acid.

My high risk pregnancy was difficult compared to a regular one. I used my “village” and all of my energy to regulate my BG. As a result, I had a healthy delivery with no complications. All of the stress and dedication were well worth the effort.

Below are things you might expect during pregnancy. I also share some of my experiences.

Work with an endocrinologist and a high-risk obgyn group. Find a pediatrician or neonatologist, a dietician and various forms of support. My “village” was helpful, but I still felt isolated and different from other women going through pregnancy.

It is advised by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to deliver your baby in a well–equipped hospital instead of a home birth. If I had a complication during my delivery, I wanted every option available to me.

According to Dr. Vanessa A. Barss and Dr. John T Repke, controlled BG during the first trimester minimizes the risks of birth defects and miscarriage. During the second and third trimesters, controlled BG levels are beneficial to the size of the baby. Due to the varying level of glucose in the blood, women with diabetes have possibilities of either a premature or macrosomic baby (above 9 pounds at term).

Plan for changing insulin requirements. Insulin is safe to administer because it does not cross the placenta.

Insulin requirements increase during pregnancy, especially the third trimester. I gave three times my normal amount. Also expect to increase you daily BG testing each day.

Check with a dietitian to help plan how to increase your nutrients, without adding more calories and carbohydrates in order to keep your BG regulated. Exercise is usually recommended unless you are under doctor restrictions.

Speak with your doctor about possible complications, including high blood pressure, the risk of pre-eclampsia, eye, kidney and heart problems. Risk of nerve damage and damage to both the large and small blood vessels should be discussed.

It might sound impossible, but having a healthy baby can be done as a diabetic. With new technology and careful planning, a healthy mother and baby can be a reality.

My pregnancy was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through, but my result is my most wonderful contribution to this world.

Sex Toys and Phthalates: Risky or Not?

Recently there’s been controversy surrounding sex toys made from certain materials. The materials in question are phthalates.

About.com wrote that phthalates are a family of chemicals used to soften hard plastics to make them more flexible. Phthalates are used in everything from perfumes and lipsticks to medical instruments and sex toys.

Phthalates aren’t bound to the plastics they soften. They can seep out and be absorbed through skin and mucous membranes. MSNBC reported that a 2004 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study looked at urine samples from 2,540 people and found phthalate metabolites in more than 75 percent of participants.

While there’s no cumulative buildup — phthalates are quickly metabolized and excreted — there’s differing opinions as to how this exposure affects humans.

That goes for phthalates-containing sex toy exposure, as well. There isn’t enough data because few studies exist. According to About.com, a recent Danish Environmental Protection Agency report said that using sex toys containing phthalates for one hour a day or less poses no health risks, unless you are pregnant or nursing.

Still other studies express concern ranging from mild to serious about phthalates as a whole. About.com wrote that there’s a growing body of research suggesting that phthalates have a toxic effect, particularly on male reproductive systems.

Most organizations agree phthalates pose some risk to health and reproduction, both directly and indirectly through environmental impact.

The American Chemistry Council, an industry lobbying group, believes that phthalates are safe. Its website stated that phthalates are among the most thoroughly studied family of compounds in the world, and have been reviewed by multiple regulatory bodies in the United States.

However the United States Congress recently banned certain phthalates in children's toys.

So a valid question is if children’s toys are protected, why not adult toys? The Bottom Line reported that one reason is that the sex toy industry is loosely regulated. Sex toys are legally labeled as novelty toys, meaning they aren’t intended for actual use.

The concern over phthalates has prompted the sex toy industry to move towards sexual health and away from novelty. They want to raise awareness around phthalates and the lack of industry oversight.

Good Vibrations, a sex-related products retailer, stated online, “we were the first company to shift away from products containing (phthalates). Our efforts were instrumental in urging the sex toy industry to develop phthalate-free products.”

As You Like It, a sexual health shop, also posted that online consumers won’t find phthalates in their store. It mentions studies linking the chemicals to kidney and liver damage and disruption to the endocrine and reproductive systems.

MSNBC reported others like LoveHoney, an online retailer, believes fears are overblown and say few customers ask about phthalates.

While scientists search for a definitive answer whether phthalates are risky or not, it’s up to consumers to decide for themselves when it comes to sex toys containing phthalates.

Food Allergy: Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Normally, your body's immune system defends against potentially harmful substances, such as bacteria, viruses, and toxins. In some people, an immune response is triggered by a substance that is generally harmless, such as a specific food.

The cause of food allergies is related to your body making a type of allergy-producing substance called immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to a particular food.

Although many people have a food intolerance, food allergies are less common. In a true food allergy, the immune system produces antibodies and histamine in response to the specific food.

Any food can cause an allergic reaction, but a few foods are the main culprits. In children, the most common food allergies are to:

Milk
Peanuts
Shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster, snails, clams)
Soy
Tree nuts
Wheat

A food allergy frequently starts in childhood, but it can begin at any age. The Stages of Sleep

Stage 1 straddles the line between alert and asleep.

Stage 2 is when your body temp cools and you're oblivious to your surroundings.

Stages 3 and 4 send you into deeper levels of sleep. Your breathing slows, your blood pressure drops, and your muscles relax.

You then move into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep for anywhere from five to 40 minutes at a time. "In REM sleep, the brain is awake but you're unaware of your surroundings, unconscious in one sense but totally conscious in another," explains Philip Westbrook, M.D. The stage occurs every 90 minutes throughout the night, and it's during REM that you have your most vivid dreams.

Once you've snoozed your way through each level, you typically go from REM right back into stage two. It all tapers off in the a.m., when your body releases cortisol to help you shrug off sleepiness as you open your eyes.

Testing for the Breast Cancer Gene

For breast cancer patients, one of the primary motivators for getting tested for hereditary cancer genes is to better understand the risks that their children might face in the future. And if women who are themselves parents test negative, they are of course happy to tell their kids--no surprise there.
To Tell or Not to Tell

Many parents, however, once they learn they've tested positive for a cancer gene, struggle with whether to actually tell their children. A study conducted at Fox Chase Cancer Center and published in the January 9 online version of the journal Cancer, provides us with some insight into this touchy issue. This research regarding how parents handled this sensitive information was an eye opener to me.

What One Group of Parents Did

The scientists first surveyed 505 parents who had gotten genetic tests for a breast-cancer gene. Among the 505, 29 percent tested positive for a BRCA gene. Most (66 percent) of these parents who tested positive shared the results with at least 1 child in their family.

The children who learned that their moms--who were all breast-cancer survivors--had tested positive for a breast-cancer gene were for the most part older. There were, however, some parents who even told their younger kids who were ages 10 to 13 years. That's pretty young to have to deal with such information, don’t you think?

My Own Experience

I remember that when the BRCA genetic test became available, in the mid-1990s, I was enthused and wanted to get tested. But when I told my daughter, who was 15 at the time, that I was planning to get genetically tested, she said, “Mom, please wait. Let me be a kid for a while longer.” That was a sobering statement for me to hear.

So I told her that before I embarked on testing I would wait until she was ready to hear the results. When she turned 21, she told me that she now wanted to know. I tested negative, which was good news; however, it did not mean that my daughter is guaranteed not to get breast cancer.
If you carried a gene, would you tell your children? And if so, when?

My message here is threefold:

First, we need to really think about what impact our test results will have on those of our children who are in fact still children. These genetic-testing results are heavy-duty information for young people to deal with.
Second, we must always remember that testing negative doesn’t mean cancer isn’t going to happen.
And third, before getting yourself tested, you are first duty-bound to go through genetic counseling so that you'll know exactly what your true risk is of carrying a gene.

Remember, testing negative for a breast cancer gene only means that you don’t carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. And yet there are other genes out there that we so far don’t have a way to test for. A counselor trained in this specialty can help you understand your risk and what steps you still might want to take to reduce your risk further. On the other hand, if you had been assuming you were high risk, you might also learn that your risk for cancer being genetically caused isn’t anywhere near as high as you thought.

Reality: The relationship between stress and heart disease still isn’t fully understood. But it’s known that chronic stress causes an increase in heart rate and blood pressure that might damage artery walls over time. The risks don’t stop there, however. Stress affects your whole body, including your brain.

One recent line of research suggests that frequent stress may even boost the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. A new study headed by scientists at the University of California at San Diego showed that repeated stress triggered brain changes in mice that were similar to the abnormal clumps of protein seen in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. The changes were most pronounced in the hippocampus. In humans, this part of the brain plays a key role in memory and is hard hit by Alzheimer’s disease.

Reality: A study in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research showed why alcohol doesn’t work very well as a stress relief strategy. In the study, University of Chicago researchers first put men under stress with a public speaking task. Then they gave the men either the equivalent of two drinks of alcohol or a placebo by IV and measured the results. Although alcohol dampened the men's hormonal responses to stress, it actually prolonged their subjective feelings of tension.

To make matters worse, the same study showed that stress could reduce the pleasant effects of alcohol or increase the craving for more of it. In the real world, this might encourage drinking too much—and that can lead to a whole host of bad choices that only multiply stress.

On the evening of April 14, the first-class passengers on the Titanic enjoyed a ten-course meal that included oysters, poached salmon, sirloin of beef, lamb with mint sauce, chocolate éclairs and waldorf pudding. According to Armchair World, a different wine was served with each course, and coffee and cigars accompanied by port and distilled spirits were available with the last course.

The Titanic had its own newspaper. According to the Natural Science Center of Greensboro, The Atlantic Daily Bulletin was printed daily and included news articles, the latest stock prices, horse-racing results, society gossip and a daily menu.

The massive ship had some unheard of amenities. A Discovery Channel article details perks such as an onboard Turkish bath, libraries, a squash court and a heated swimming pool. The luxury liner even had an infirmary with an operating room.

While the Titanic boasted some of the wealthiest people in the world on board, two famous men of that era didn't make the trip. According to Discovery.com, financier J. P. Morgan and famed chocolatier Milton S. Hershey had planned to sail aboard the ship's maiden voyage but canceled at the last minute.

Less than a month after the tragedy, silent film actress and Titanic survivor Dorothy Gibson starred in the film "Saved From the Titanic." According to Stageclick, the actress reenacted her personal story of the tragedy, complete with the actual white silk evening dress she wore on that fateful night. The film was a hit in America and England, but the only known prints were destroyed two years later in a fire.

Many artifacts from the Titanic were salvaged. The Titanic Museum in Massachusetts houses The Titanic Historical Society's collection, which includes a lifejacket, lifeboat flag, luncheon and dinner menus, a square of first-class stateroom carpet, letters and postcards written on board, first class china and a bridge bell.

According to UK's Mirror, a violin alleged to have belonged to Titanic bandleader Wallace Harley was recently discovered. While tests are being done to prove its authenticity, if sold it would break the record for a Titanic artifact, post office keys that were sold in England for £101,000 in 2007.

The former home of one of the most famous Titanic survivors is now a museum in Denver. The 1910 home of socialite Margaret Brown - known after the tragedy as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," is open for tours and workshops.

The last remaining survivor of the Titanic died in 2009. Millvana Dean was only nine weeks old and the youngest passenger on the ship when she was put on a lifeboat and saved. According to The Guardian, her death at age 97 came just a month after "Titanic" stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet helped pay her nursing home expenses.

Many sources have pegged the band's final song as "Nearer My God To Me." But in a 1912 interview with The New York Times, surviving crew member Harold Bride said the band played the hymn "Autumn" as the ship went down.
